Hi, I'm after some newbie info: I have just completed the CELTA, I have no prior experience of teaching and I do not have a degree - in which countries (I understand there are visa restrictions around qualifications) could I look for my first teaching job to get the much needed 12 months experience? |

Last I heard, Indonesia doesn't require a degree. It may have changed (I haven't been there in three years). I also hear that China doesn't require one, either, but I can't vouch for that - I'm a hiring director in China, and MY teachers certainly need to have a degree for ME to get their visas.
Try just looking at the job board and see where you can get a job.
Also, try posting this question in General Latin America. I don't believe Mexico requires a degree just yet, and other L.A. countries may be the same.
Good luck! |

Whats your country? Non-Americans can get the working holiday visa that lets you stay in selected countries for up to 12 months. Americans are SOL unless they have a degree. EU is pretty much out unless you are a citizen and Mexico I believe requires a degree. Try Latin America or Thailand. |

I believe that's still true, but in the last six months or so Indonesia has brought in a requirement that only those 25 or older can receive a work visa. |

A lot of Latin America would be a possibility. Degree requirements vary more from school to school than they do by actual government requirements.
Try to contact schools directly, as many countries may require a degree for a work visa, but most schools have alternative ways of arranging visas.

Thanks for all the advice. Luckily I am over 25 ( ) so I will look into Indonesia. I understand through looking for jobs in Thailand that they all require a degree for a working visa. Unfortunately I have used up my NZ and OZ working holiday visas so they are out. I am an EU citizen, however, the competition for teaching jobs is fierce, everyone else who goes for jobs in Spain, Italy, France (Western Europe) already have degrees, CELTAs and usually at least 12 months experience. I know I could look for work in Eastern Europe but to be honest - its just too cold! On the L.A. side - I have posted on the forum and got some useful information back.
Thanks again. |
