holap...
I've been wondering:
1) Where is everyone on the board, location-wise?
It seems like the majority are in Santiago. What sector?
Is there anyone in the south? north?
AND it's a two-part question! watch out!
2) Where has been your favorite place to visit in Chile? |

I'm in Nunoa, Santiago
The best place I've visited in Chile is Torres Del Paine. My most favourite places to visit are the ski resorts around Santiago, well in the winter anyway. |

I ocassionally look at this forum because I love Chile. I did my junior year there in university. I lived in Santiago, Las Condes, to be exact. My favorite place was Frutillar a tiny town in the south. I travelled from Arica to Puerto Montt, during my time there. The north was interesting because it was my first time in a desert, but I must say I prefered the south. I also really enjoyed the wine region of Curico.
I also loved visiting Neruda's houses, I don't think I could pick a favorite of them. I went back to each more than once. |

My favorite place was Pucon. Something about snowboarding down an active volcano, soaking at night under the moonlight in an outdoor thermal pool, being able to see an orange glow over the volano at night, having more food options than just the typical glorified hotdogs you find everywhere else (not very vegan-friendly!), etc.

Hey Denise, how's it going?
I also made it down to Pucon before the season ended and had a great time. The snow was a little wet as the weather was hot, but it was still plenty deep enough for a decent day's boarding. Roll on June so i can get back down there. I recommend a trip over the border to San Martin de Los Andes. There's a resort there called Chapelco, which is excellent. It's only about 150km from Pucon but due to border delays it takes about 6 hours to get there.
Did you visit the veggie cafe at Hostel Ecole? The food there is great, especially the breakfasts. Apparently there's a branch in Santiago but I can't find it. |

I stayed at Ecole while I was there. As soon as I saw 'veggie restaurant' in my little guidebook, my mind was made up! I was a bit disappointed to see that they still actually served a bit of meat. Oh well. I guess they have a different concept of 'vegetarian.'
Ive left Chile and moved up north to Peru, so no snowboarding! With any luck, assuming I get my passport problems sorted out and I can afford it, I will fly back down south in the winter with my board. Peru does have sandboarding, though. It's on my list of things to do during my holiday travels. Yay!

my turn--
I love the south as well, especially Valdivia. It's such a welcoming town even when it rains (the umbrellas just come up like mushrooms).
But I'll be living in Valparaso de mi amor come February and I couldn't be happier! |

Do you want to stay in Chile? Just for the novelty value, I`d say go as far away geographically as you can afford to! It`s easy to do day trips around Santiago, so go further afield! This should be a good time of the year to head down south, to Punta Arenas. I think you missed the prime penguin-viewing, nature-trekking season by a month or so, but it should still be good.
It would require a loooong weekend, though, because it takes about 4 hours to fly down there from Santiago (including a stop in Puerto Montt) and there are so many nature preserves and parks to see.
When I flew down there in June (hoping to get some good snow, but ultimately heartbroken--friggin' global warming!), airfare was about $200, I think.
