I am thinking about finding a teaching position at a university in Japan but want to know what the "going rate" might be for salaries (in addition to what benefits one might expect) for university level instructors would be. I have eleven years of experience teaching ESL, seven of which have been overseas. I have a BS in education and a MS in TESOL. Any information would be appreciated!

second question--how much would a foreign instructor expect to pay for health insurance premiums in Japan?

Many thanks.

The following is the 1997 Kansai area college teacher salary scale, complied by the Kansai Private Universities Labor Union. If you are single, and if you use Japan's health insurance system instead of some foreign plan, you might have to pay only 2,500 yen/month. That's for general (kokumin kenko hoken) insurance. For insurance that a company or the university might help with copayments, I'm not sure. However, bear in mind that the amount you pay after a year will skyrocket to ten times that amount.

Sad to say but the best you can probably hope for would be a 1-3 year non-renewable contact position. To be perfectly honest your credentials and eperience would probably get you a better, more stable job in the Arab Gulf than in Japan. The chances of landing one of the "golden ticket" tenure-like jobs in Japan are extremely small.

The university contract positions are not particularly lucrative in Japan but are generally confortable for a single person. Married with kids would be harder but still possible -- that depends a lot on the individual university and the individual.

As I said jobs in, for example, the UAE would seem like a better bet and with your experience and degrees you should be able to land a job at one of the better universities there. Check out the UAE forum.

Still, if you are absolutely desperate to come to Japan all you can do is start keeping an eye out for jobs and apply to as many as you can. Getting hired will be a bit of a crap-shoot and don't take any rejection as having anything whatsoever to do with your qualification for the job. The hiring process in Japan (particularly at the university level) can be bizarre to say the least.

I am currently full time at my university and teaching part time at another. Salaries will vary depending on your age, qualifications, experience, public or private university. the full timers on limited contracts (5 years, no renewal) are on about 6 million yen a year. Currently there is a labor dispute with the university over this system.

I will add also that many univesities are preparing to outsource part time and full time jobs to outside companies (dispatch). the big question now seems to be over the qualifications (or lack thereof) of foreigndispatch teachers to work in a university. Wages and salaries are going south and working conditions are being stripped away.

I am covered under the national health insurance and pension and my employer pays 50% of the premium. I pay around 35,000 yen a month out of my own pocket and the employer pays the rest.

benefits (not all are financial) include

use of private office for research for term of contract
computer and internet access
research allowance to buy books, software etc
travel budget to attend conferences (including overseas)
non-voting rights at meetings (depending on school clout of foreign teachers is usually minimal, seen and not heard)
health insurance and pension
retirement allowance at the end of three years
3 -5 months bonus in addition to monthly salary

Part timers usually dont get any of these, but simply teach their classes and get paid for the classes they teach.

P.S. Those salaries that Glenski quoted are nearly ten years old. Rube has talked about providing an updated version but these are only averages and not really based on concrete figures.

A lot has happened to university salaries in the last 5 years and its only going to get worse.
