Hey guys.. just a quick question, I'm planning to travel to Caracas early in the new year to take up a postion with one of the large (corporate I guess you could say) language schools.

Just wanted to know an approxiamate figure for what someone should be earning in Caracas.. this is my first foreign ESL position but I have worked in the field teaching refugees and private students so I'm not completely green, i.e. I have some limited experience to bring to the position.

Are there any resources online that deal with cost of living issues for Venez. i.e. rent prices/food prices.... beer prices?

Sorry for all the questions but would really appreciate ANY information any of you guys might have in regards to ESL in Venezuela..

beer at a bar is about 1000 bolivars about 50� USD(its really good beer there), at a store you can find really cheap rum not good rum but rum none the less 1.5 litres for 5000 bolivars about 2.50$ USD that was the cheapest I found, it was near Universidad nacional experimental Simon Rodriguez. Thats if you like cheap rum I don't but I'm cheap so I buy it anyways. Theres a fair amount of good rum as well, lots of stores sells alcohol. You can get the latest movies from the streets for like 1$. Ice cream cones unless you get them from mcdonalds(which was like the most expensive place I ate at) for 1.5k bolivars.

Rent I don't know, I think someone said to me about $100 USD a month

Food, at a restraunt you can get a whole chicken for 16, 000 bolivars which is about 7 dollars, not really cheap, comes with potatoes though. Gum, chips and stuff is about the same as north american prices. Burger Stand Vendors (greatest burgers in the world, not really a patty of meat its different and you can have Ham, chicken or beef) 3-6k bolivars for a nice big burger. You can get a 3 or 4 litre of pepsi at the same price as a 2 litre in canada. I'm not sure on grocery prices, fruits and vegetables are quite cheap however. Its hot there all the time so drink lots of water and make sure you change your socks! 1000 bolivars can get you a descent headband.

Don't wear red around Caracus outside of festivals or rallies, even though the Majority support Chavez you can face some opposition by right-wing thugs. Be careful how loud you talk or what you say in very public places, you might end up with a (can't say first part of the word)roach in your meal. Watch the TV once you understand Spanish see how crazy the opposition media can be.
