|
|
Hi there. I'm a newbie to the forum. I have some questions about employment on the Yucatan Peninsula. My wife and I are currently travelling through Mexico, now in San Cristobal de Las Casas, and heading to Tulum within the week. We're going to look for work once we get there, in Tulum if possible (friends there). We'll be looking for work pretty much anywhere along the peninsula though and were wondering if anyone has suggestions or guidance for us. Thanks!

If Villahermosa is not too far off the path, PM me. |

I work in Playa del Carmen. After two hurricanes this year, business might be a little slow in some institutes. You won't find much in Tulum, but might want to try Puerto Aventuras or Playa. Cancun is another option. |

If you want to make a lot of money and work at a school that allows you COMPLETE academic freedom, PM me. There are jobs in Cuidad del Carmen, Cmpeche ( the other side of the peninsula ). It is not the Caribe, but the beach is nice. We have two Canadians on staff. |

Be very careful of promises of good money and academic freedom. They may have you turning tricks on the corner by the end of the month. |

Playadelsol, Please dignify yourself and our profession by avoiding remarks about prostituting teachers. I am fully in agreement that people should be careful in choosing a job. The school is rated # 1 in the state and # 34 in the country. A school that mistreats the teachers doesnt have those qualifications. Our school has an 800-seat auditorium that hosts national and international cultural events. We have 600 students in a private K-12 program. I work in the four-story air-conditioned high school. The teachers have first class offices with computers. We go to continuing education classes in Mexico City regularly. It is a dream job. |

Samantha, Please go back and read my message. I only said that we have three Canadians on staff |
Today you say:

There is more than just missing Canadians that aren't adding up in your posts my friend. BUT I am sure you will have a sarcastic retort or an insult to throw my way, and will continue to shamelessly promote your school in this rainy, humid, bug infested hell-hole area of Mexico until the moderators shut you down. It is obvious you believe you are fooling the masses...well maybe you ARE fooling those that don't live and work in Mexico........so shame on you! |

If you can find an insult I have posted I will post an apology. Unlike you, I have been polite and conciliatory. We have very, very few mosquitoes. It is cool in the mornings and evenings, and it is far from a hell-hole. Your opinion, while valued, is very UNTRUE. I urge all interested people to search all your posts and compare them to all my posts. The difference in attitude and intent will be shocking. |

That is just so NOT true. The beauty of your "little city", "little town" , or whatever you are calling it today is definitely in the eye of the beholder. No problem. Mosquitoes are real and they are there. Lots of them.
That is not the point. You have hi-jacked too many threads including this one with your blatant self-promotion, something which should not be necessary for such a wonderful upscale school in Utopia! There should be lines clear across the country to get in for an interview, resumes stacked to the sky, teachers hopeful faces pressed up against the windows for a glimpse! Get real. The OP is going to the Yucatan because he WANTS to, so try to contain yourself. Sorry if you find my comments shocking. I still want to know what happened to the other Canadian in the past couple of days! |

I guess so.
However, I do want some of that Kool-Aid that cwc is drinking. |

Unless you're specifically commited to EFL, this is probably not the board you want to ask. Try Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/categories.cfm?catid=17 or possibly http://www.playa.info
Do you both have Bachelor's Degrees? Any certifications? I'm preparing to look for work in that area soon, so I'm afraid I won't be much help until I'm employed, myself!

The city of Merida has quite a few private language schools and other kinds of schools and institutions that offer English classes, if teaching English is the type of work you're looking for. However, without knowing more about you and your wife's qualifications and previous teaching experience, I couldn't really say what your chances would be for finding decent teaching jobs in Merida. |
