hi,
I'm trying to find the best (cheapest ) way to send home money (around 200,000 Yen).
The obvious is by 'bank transfer' but it's probably the most expensive.
Thank you in advance for any advice. |

The cheapest will probably be by post office draft (forgot what it's called). It costs about 700 yen per set amount you can send. With 200,000 yen, you will probably have to buy more than one draft, but it's sure cheaper than a 5000 yen fee for a wire transfer. |

The cheapest way to send money to the UK is via a Post Office GIRO transfer - you'll need a GIRO account in the UK to send it to. It takes less than an hour to arrive and costs 1000 yen. The next cheapest is by postal remittance. It takes however long the mail takes and costs start at 1000 yen.
Telegraphic transfers (which includes the over-rated GoLlyods service) are for mugs.
Go get the booklet 'Guide to International Remittances' from the Post Office here. It explains it all. |
