I've never used Internet boards to find work before and I'm wondering what the experience is like. If I respond to a job ad with just basic qualifications (a TESOL certificate) I'm likely to get an offer? Or do I have to apply to 20 different postings to get one offer? I'm talking China here. Is the competition really stiff and I have to take what I can get, or am I going to have some choice? |

I would think that the more positions you apply for the more likely it is that you will find what you are looking for. If you receive a number of different offers then you will be able to compare what each is offering and possibly negotiate a better deal with your first choice. Knowing that you have a second offer to fall back on if needed is certainly going to help you be more forceful in your negotiations with the first school, but take not to be too demanding. Choose some things that are really important to you and concentrate on those. |

I've used internet boards on various occasions to express interest in advertised jobs. I've always had a good response. Of course, it depends on what you are offering yourself. Basic qualifications can be a bit restricting, but practical experience & actually being in China would be in your favour.
From my own experience, a one page resume is sufficient when expressing interest. Information includes: name, nationality(as per passport), country of birth, age, contact details, academic qualifications, foreign teaching experience, etc. I always try to include a small colour picture of my face (preferably smiling).
WRT vacancies, a lot depends on the time of year, as well as the level / type of teaching work you want.
It would seem a normal practice to be asked to submit a few official documents to a prospective employer. I do this by scanning the documents, and forwarding them by email.
The contracts I've seen are fairly generic, but then I know clearly what I want & expect. Once I've seen a draft contract, I can ask questions if appropriate.

One thing I would insit upon is unshared housing, off-campus, with 24/7 unrestricted access. Unless you like being locked down like a prisoner each night.
Don't accept excuses why it can't be done. It certianly can. |

I have found the best way is contacting with schools directly via email. Internet Boards havn't been useful in my experience as the response is very slow and I can't really know anything about the school or the job from a short posting. The only useful thing about Internet Boards I have found is if you can find direct contact information for postings that are of interest to you. Send the school an email introducing yourself and ask about their school and the job opening. It's a lot more effective and personable.
