Okay so Ive read just about every post in this forum and have recieved some conflicting info. so here it goes. Im moving to Brasil towards the end of January from Argentina, Is it worth trying to get a work visa if im only planning on staying for 6 months? should I try to have a job set up before I arrive or just find one once Im there and/or do privates? Im TEFL certified and speak decent portuguese. Finally, I would love to hear any suggestions on anyplace to teach besides SP and Rio, after 7 months in BsAs Id prefer something smaller, Florianapolis, Maceio, Porto Seguro, Recife.... Oh one more thing, Should I look for jobs before carnaval or after when things go back to normal, I know the academic year is just ending and vacation begining? Thanks to any and all that can help me out. |

As a school owner, my can tell you to start looking BEFORE Carnival, because most schools that I know start looking for teacher before, so after carnival they dont have to train anyone they can just let them teach. And if your just staying 6 months, I wouldnt worry about the work visa, no one ask for papers to teach...
Also, have you thought about Porto Alegre?

Sorry to hi-jack the topic slightly. I have some similar enquiries. Maybe Portochuck, you could help me!
Like Rickyfive, I`m planning to head to Brazil (Salvador) for January before Carnival. I was planning to find work on arrival. Is this advisable or should I try hard to find a school before hand? What are the best ways for finding schools and pupils other than google.com.br.
DOES ANYONE RECOMMEND ANY GOOD SCHOOLS IN SALVADOR!?
I have CELTA certificate and experience teaching in UK, Spain and Mexico,
Many thanks

I dont think anyone will hire you before ou arrive in Brazil..but stranger things have happened.....
You not going to start working before Carnival.....This is the summer.....not many people study..although there are a few people taking intensive courses. Take enough money to live on for however long you are planning to stay, because lets face it...your not going to get rich in Brazil unless you have money. I would try to look at Berlitz, CCAA, or other schools like this...send them your resume explain that your coming to Brazil, this way when you arrive they may have it on file...cant promise.
When you arrive start going to Bars, offices, and other upscale places that locals hang out...let them know you are a native speaker...(theres a catch...becareful not to brag too much because of the crime rate...) Have some flyers or cards made, get a cell....and hand out your flyer/card in office buildings, this may help you get some private students...they pay more, but again I never get a lot of new students during this time of the year....
I hope this helps...sorry if its not clear, im in a big hurry going to a Christmas party with free beer...
If you have more questions please ask. |
