My wife tells me that workers in DF get a bonus every December which is equal to one month salary. Is this correct? Does it apply to ESL teachers also?
She was a CPA in DF so I'm wondering if it applies to ESL teachers as well.

Not always...at Wall St Institute, you don't get a bonus, but rather, 3 weeks paid leave. |

Gee some people want their cake, to eat it too and keep the plate!
I like the new avatar MELEE, makes me think of gingham frocks and wholesome stuff like that.

The three week paid vacation sounds pretty goog also. Is that all at one time? So you're off most of December? DF is starting to sound better and better.
I only get one week off in December.

That's just Wall St, working legally. Few schools are running classes from Dec. 16th to Jan 7th or so. If you are contracting, consulting, or working illegally, you get the time off with no pay. |

A month off sounds great. I could go to Acapulco maybe.

Is the bonus legally required? I know such a bonus in Mexico (not just DF) is common, but I just assumed it was a perk only offered by better employers. The school I work for also gives me two weeks paid leave plus a month's bonus. |

You wouldn't really notice that you had left Mexico City for all the Chilangos there, guey. You can do better than Acapulco. I bet Cancun will have some good deals. |

Here's the deal:
Mexican companies are legally obliged to pay each contracted employee an aguinaldo before Christmas. The aguinaldo is fifteen days' pay.
But before you get too excited...
a) the employee must have a contract
b) I also think the employee needs to have been employed for a minimum of one year (though I'm not certain about this)
c) many of us ESL teachers don't have a specified 'day's pay'
and
d) if the employer doesn't pay, what are you going to do about it?
Medium- and large-sized companies normally pay up. Many small companies (eg language schools) don't.

Good gumshoeing...particularly on the contract bit. Not overly common in language schools.
This year, I'll be getting another handshake likely, three weeks off, and a lump of coal. |

With one exception, all employers that I know of locally pay their regular employees an aguinaldo. Everyone (including "muchachos/muchachas" who clean houses) expects and gets an aguinaldo. There's a government office employees can go to and report any employers who don't pay it. The only employees who don't get an aguinaldo locally are those who work for slimy businesses that don't provide contracts and lay off lots of employees the first part of December, then rehire them in January. Some of the big granjas (commercial farms) are known for this.
Where I work, I get an aguinaldo equal to almost 2 quincenas' pay + regular pay for 2 weeks off in December + vacation pay for those 2 weeks + sometimes an additional bonus + double vales. It's especially good to be employed by the university in December.

Yes...the kind of sympathy that you can wrap up in a gift and send to DF.
HINT HINT!
Hey, a Kris Kringle gift exchange would be a lot of fun between all of us here, if we weren't so distant from each other. |
