I am thinking of going to CR later this year and have been looking at forums such as this for advice and bits of helpful info. As I don't have too much money to take with me to supplement my living I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what it costs to go out and have a good time.

Socialising - if I wanted to go to the beach for the weekend or go out would I be able to do this on a teaching salary?

Travelling costs - if I have to spend large parts of my day travelling around the city (san jose) what would this cost? I understand most places do not give you a supplement for this.

I understand it I can expect $200-350 on homestay or a shared apartment.

Just need to know I can leave San Jose for weekends and enjoy myself without too many monetary restrictions. If I am to believe most of what I have read most of CR beauty and charm is to be found else where.

socializing: no problem. beer is cheap, bus tickets to the beach run about five bucks, hostels are easy to find, and a lot of teaching jobs give you friday or monday off.

transportation costs: very low. seriously. even taxis are cheap if you're thinking in dollars (which, by the way, I do not recommend you make a habit of!)

living: $200? for a SHARED apartment? you're crazy. I have a two bedroom furnished place in San Pedro, and that costs $300. when I first came here I got a room for about $100. trust me, if you've got to go cheap, you'll be able to find cheap.
