I have visited several AMIDEAST websites, but cannot seem to contact them via email. Does this organization still exist, or have US budget cuts put them out of business? Does anyone have experience working with them?
Many thanks for your attention, Steven H.

They do indeed exist. They have the contract from ETS to run TOEFL tests in the UAE. As ZU students all have to get a TOEFL score, we have a lot of contacts with them but, unfortunately for current purposes, I am not usually involved myself. If I can find an email address for them I'll edit it into this post but it might not be till Monday as we have a long weekend now (UAE National Day).
Added 10 minutes later: it looks like we're in luck. I found an email from them in my archive. This seems to be the address:
[email protected]
I hope it's still correct. |

Contrary to popular belief, AMIDEAST is not an offshoot of the US government (like the British Council is), so their budget does not depend on it. It is alive and well, all over the Middle East. They are a dependable employer, but they don't hire too many full contract foreign hires. Most of their teaching staff is on an hourly scale. I'd say that they are one of the best 'language school' level employers out there... along with the British Council.
What country are you interested in?

I worked for AMIDEAST in Aden for almost 2 years. I loved the experience. If it's AMIDEAST in Yemen you're interested it, PM me with any questions you may have. |

I would have to agree with the princess. AMIDEAST is a great organization. I must admit that I've only worked here in the Aden, Yemen branch for 5 months, but I have no complaints - on the contrary. It's not like the gulf countries in that you get a great salary and great benefits, but you can save and they also provide you with a place to live. The cost of living here in Yemen is very cheap. But also I must recommend that anyone who is planning to come to Yemen be in the mindset for a different experience.

Contrary to popular belief, AMIDEAST is not an offshoot of the US government (like the British Council is), says veiledsentiments.
That explains a lot about the Council style of management! |
