Hi. Im new to this forum and I would like to know what is the first thing to do if I want to teach in Cina. I speak french as a first language and a pretty good english which I would say would be good enough to teach kids. Im 43 and I have a college diploma in communication. Do I really need a tesol diploma or do i have enough competence with my background. Thanks in advance to all of you who are going to help me.

Merci d'avoir rpondu.

OK. We were exchanging in french. I guess that someone has to go back to their roots once in a while. Sorry about that if it frustrated you. Surprised

Ok, many of us could work the forum in Pinyin, some even in Hanzi. To prove what? The OP asked about teaching English in English.
Msimard, just let prospective employers know you are from an English speaking country and include a photo. If you've got a degree and confidence in yourself as a teacher, that should be enough.
Teaching kids is tough work though.

Is a college diploma is enough to get a job as an english teacher? Thanks.

To the OP,
How strong is your accent? I know some French-Canadian accents can be very heavy.

The bottom line is whether the employer can get you the necessary documents (invitation letter, work permit, and the visa notice) so you can get your Z visa at your local Chinese consulate. To be able to teach legally at a Chinese college/university (not sure about middle school), more and more provincial Public Security Bureaus (the police station) now ENFORCE the SAFEA regulation of having a bachelor's degree (some will accept a TESOL/CELTA as substitute).

I think most Chinese employers are only concerned with the fact that the OP is from an native English-speaking country. I knew of an old man in Qingdao who was born and raised in Montreal, later moving to Vancouver before coming to China. He had a noticeable French accent but he was hot commodity in Qingdao as he'd been working there for years.

True. Most employers can't differentiate between native - or near native - speaker's accents.
Just tell them you're a Canuck and go for gold.
A diploma, on nice parchment, will do the trick.

I doubt you will be totally happy with jobs available for English teachers at primary and secondary school levels - you won't be teaching ENGLISH but so-called "oral English" to classrooms full to their rafters with noisy and occasionally ill-bred kids: think of 60 kids and more per class, with you trying to make them speak when they profess to not understanding YOU because you DON'T SPEAK LOUDLY enough or because YOU HAVE an "ACCENT"... It can be traumatising! IT can be otherwise too - but nothing is granted in this business!

THe majority of newbies go for adult training centres - not exactly ideal but possibly a lot better, especially if your students are self-paying adults.

Personally I consider kindergartens the best employers - short working hours (a period has 20 to 30 minutes), and you are relatively free in how you do your job although parents have unreasonable expectations!

I don't have a very big accent. It's only noticeable with certain verbs or words. Wink
