Hot and cold are relative terms. In Hokkaido a warm day in winter is zero degrees and as low as minus 10 or 20.

If you want a temperate climate I would recommend Western japan such as in Shikoku or Kyushu, which has a semi-tropical climate.

I live in Kyoto and it snows in winter here and summer is about 39 degrees Celsius,

You can escape the cold, but you can't escape the heat/humidity. You've been warned!

Where I live in Shikoku, it is 35-36C most days in the summer and very humid. Winters are mild, 5-8C most of the times and very very little snow. I wish there was more snow. Temps are about the same inside (an unheated room) or outside.

As someone from the Seattle area I can say that of all of the places in Japan I've lived or visited, none of them were anything like Seattle. Haven't been to Kyushu or Hokkaido yet... but I'm pretty sure they're nothing like Seattle either. Wink

Yes, it gets cold in the winter, some places it dumps snow, and the summers... well your hair will never be the same again. But isn't that part of the fun of living someplace other than home?

My home town is just north of Seattle in Canada, and I can tell you the weather on Kyushu is nothing like it is back home.

Rainy Season: Downpour. Not the soft, misty rain of home.

Summer: A sauna. Literally. Who knew setting an airconditioner to 27 degrees could make it feel cool?

Winter: Dry, and after the furnace of summer, surprisingly cool.

Personally, though, I really like the weather here.

Hope that's a little helpful.

I'm from Seattle, too, and I find that Miyagi is quite nice. Granted, it's much hotter and more humid in the summer, but only for a couple of weeks. Winter is a bit colder, but it's wonderfully dry, nothing like the the months and months of drippy sloppy drizzle we are blessed with in the Emerald City. Yes, Japan's both hotter and colder than the PNW, but only in the height of summer and the depths of winter. I love the weather here.
