We often report on the larger schools but here is a report from a smaller school.
A long time member recently heard that there were mistakes in pay checks. After reviewing his records, he realised there were errors dating back as far as 5 years. If the member had approached the Labour Standards Office he would have found that there is a 2 year limit to back claims. Instead, the union negotiated and was able to win the member hundreds of thousands of yen more than if he had left it up to Labour Standards.
People working in small schools often wonder the benefit of being a union member. This is just one example. |

To be fair, Labour Standards office can be ok/good at times. But it really is a case of CAN be. It depends what office and wht staff you get on the day.
This example does show also why a union can be better than a government body. The person never would have gotten back all he was owed without the union. He would have missed out on 3 years worth of backpayments. |
