You can't apply for a work visa until a school has invited you to teach there. |

It doesn't matter if you are an American or not. As of last April new regulations came into effect. An example is the fact that a completed medical exam, along with a signed contract has to be completed before the Work Permit, Invitation Letter, and Visa Notice can be issued. Other regulations became enforced more rigidly, e.g. the job applicant, i.e. the potential FT must hold a four-year university degree. However, as we have mentioned time and time again, regulations are enforced differently in different parts of China. To date, I believe there are still regions where one doesn't need to complete a medical exam prior to arriving in China. To teach in Inner Mongolia, I also had to submit a police background check.

It's the job you have now. If you are not working now, just write "Unemployed". |

Can you list all the major regulations, or can you point me to where they can be found? Thanks. |

The regulations vary from province to province, region to region and are enforced differently. For example, I was told by a Vancouver-based recruiter last year that Shanghai authorities now require FT applications to have a four-year degree PLUS two years of teaching experience. If you can read simplified Chinese, you can check out www.caiep.org/faq/ . |

This varies INCREDIBLY from one region to the other, new regulations notwithstanding. In Zhejiang, I know for a fact that the medicals are done in province, even if it has been out-province, it is done again. The same is the case in Hunan, where according to previous postings on this Board, visas could not be changed in province. Indeed, they are changed in province, and the medical is redone in province, even if it were done overseas prior to arrival. Other provinces are similar.
As in China, case-by-case, region-by-region. TW writes that in Inner Mongolia a police check is required. This is true in some regions and yet I have friends in other parts of Inner Mongolia that were not asked to submit one. |
