Wondering how long it generally takes to get from initial application to a job offer. I've mailed off numerous applications over the last couple of weeks to universities in Saudi for positions starting in Aug/Sept 06 and have so far received acknowledgements for most of my applications. Obviously there is no one answer but would like to know how these things typically go. I assume there will be some sort of interview. I am in the UK at the moment so are these typically conducted over the phone or do Saudi institutions have representatives/agents overseas to do this on their behalf? Also, are there long time consuming hoops to go through in processing visas? Ideally I'd like to be offered a suitable position as soon as possible which would allow me a nice long period of time to either find some temp teaching work or doss on a beach somewhere.
Any advice/info gratefully received.
Cheers

Hi

I have accepted a position with a school in Saudi Arabia, after many months of applying.

Once accepting the position I stopped applying for other positions assuming that I would soon be on my way to Saudi.

Unfortunately it has been many months now since accepting the job and every time I speak to the recruiter he promises me that he is in the process of sorting out my visa.

So, how long does it take to get a job in Saudi?

It might not take long to get the job, but it might take you forever to get there.

Your is a bit of a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string question, as there is no short answer to how long it takes to get a Saudi visa. It can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on many factors, among them how influential (and efficient) your employers are, how urgently they need you, which Embassy you are dealing with, if you are single or with a family.... and so on and so forth.

As to your other questions, some Saudi employers have agents abroad, but others - maybe most? - interview by phone, if at all. And yes, the visa process is time-consuming, tiresome and sometimes frustrating, esp. if you live far from a city with a Saudi embassy. You have to get all sorts of documents stamped and 'attested', do a thorough medical, get the originals of your educational certificates and so on. Exact details depend on the employer and Embassy concerned, but it is always a tedious procedure, which is not even guaranteed to result in 'success'.

Thanks for the info folks. I've applied for university positions which won't start till much later this year. Looks like a long spell of wait and see. Ideally I'd like a quick result so I could head back to Taiwan for a 6 month stint and then a lengthy spell on a beach before heading off to Saudi. In present location, not much EFL work available so my 'skills' are rusting on the Asda night shift.

It's quite quick to get the visa from the UK; much less hassle than elsewhere.

Remember schools have been on holiday since the beginning of the month. There are now two weeks of exams, and then another weeks holiday.
