I've been living in Taichung, Taiwan for about 4 months now. I find it kinda boring. I have been to many countries and lived abroad before. I would have to say this is got to be the most lame yet. Its no Amsterdam, and certainly holds no architectural beauty like Rome. I also find the nightlife to be lacking.
This is my first time to Asia. I was hoping for something more exotic. I am teaching here, and now looking to teach somewhere else. I would have rather taught on the east coast as it is gorgeous but I hear it is quite difficult to find teaching positions there.
Can anyone recommend a more exotic locale?? What about Vietnam or Thailand?? I am not opposed to working out in the country side as long as there is ocean, beaches, and beauty. |

If all those things were so important to you, why didn't you do the research BEFORE you left home?
My advice is for you to do it now. Don't rely on what anyone on a message board tells you. Ask a hundred people and you'll get a hundred different answers. |

You can find these things in Taiwan, but not in Taichung!!! One problem with trying to find all the above plus culture and nightlife is that culture and nightlife is best found in big cities wereas ocean, beaches, and beauty are best found in smaller towns and areas were culture and nightlife afe often lacking.
Why not move to I-lan where you can enjoy beautiful beaches and mountains and easily travel to Taipei on the weekends? |

Perhaps you need to get a PADI diving certificate and head off to Thailand. Teaching English is not the glamorous job many believe it to be.
I just met an Australian guy who lived in Koh Tao for three years. No architecture there mind. |

I am slightly surprised by YOUR surprise man... the internet is a world or information, yet you are comparing apples with pears. Holland to Taiwan? what the? Having been to Vietnam and having done my research, I recommend you look at that option as there seems to be a relatively good pay rate compared to cost of living, and you will find palm trees and beaches galore. However, most jobs are in Ho Chi Minh city which, if you look at a map, is NOT near the coast. It is however a short train trip to Da Nang and Na Trang where you will find all the beaches you want. It is also a short plane trip to secluded islands off the south coast and a bus ride to Kampuchia (Cambodia) which is a brilliant place to explore if you aren't expecting the pampering of a Thai resort.

You still have 7-8 months left on your contract. Right now you need to find something interesting happening in Taichung. Go to Forumosa and try to make friends in you area. Buy a scooter and travel locally. Every city can be boring. You have to make the most of it.
As for the arch., it's going to be the same from one end of the island to the other. Rarely will you see variation. (O.K. maybe in Taipei) |

But be careful. There are many pitfalls one may encounter if one chooses to follow this advice. |

I may have "over" quoted you. I agree 100% with the latter part of your advice. Buy a scooter. It really helps to get out cruising along the coast or making your life simpler, ie: shopping.
I further suggest taking a chinese class. Being able to communicate being only 1 benefit. Research shows that keeping the brain stimulated can stave off the onset of such baddies as Alzheimers and Parkinsons.
I forget where I heard that tho'. |

OP,
Taiwan and the Taiwanese are like their airport and their beer selection:
B - O - R - I - N - G ! |

It is true that Taiwan is boring compared with many other destinations.
In this teacher's case, having travelled and lived in over 50 countries world wide, Taiwan is the most boring and frustrating place to live.
Yes - it is possible to earn decent coin here (in Taiwan) - but quality of life? Definitely not in Taiwan!
One is here to learn Chinese/Mandarin, not for the other stuff.

Ghost WHY have you lived and worked in over 50 countries? Why are you always bored no matter where you go? Don't tell us it's because you like travelling......
Having worked with you I suggest the reason is because you are a BORING person. You will retire form your travels broke, without a wife and nothing to talk about except how BORING your travels were. Oh dear. And what possible use could you have for possessing all those obscure languages you insist on learning except for bragging purposes? Oh dear. Also, any more slander from you on the Turkey forum insinuating that I am endulging in criminal behaviour and you shall be reported to the moderator. |

But at least some of us will not die at age 50 from cirrhosis of the liver, like some alcoholic 'pseudo con' teachers on this forum.
