Has anyone here lived there before? I understand it is a relatively small city? Is there a nightlife? Many things to do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Havent lived there but its considered pretty provincial. If you want to party and meet other foreigners I suggest you go to Osaka or Namba which is about 90 minutes away by express.

Wakayama is close to the Kansai airport. Nice part of the country and halfway to Shirahama (which is where all the nice beaches are) but not much going on in the way of nightlife IMO.

They have a kind of mock Spanish village amusement park thing there and if you are into watersports and the outdoors (hiking etc) theres quite a bit to do.

Actually you can get to Osaka in just under an hour on either the JR Hanwa Line or the Nankai Main Line.

You're thinking of Spain Mura, but it's nowhere near Wakayama city. Spain Mura is out in Mie prefecture just outside the town of Isobe.

Wakayama city has about 400,000 people and a castle in the middle of the city.

You can surf in the city (Isonoura Beach) but it's tiny and very crowded due to it being the closest surfable break to Osaka. There are good breaks about 30 minutes south of Wakayama and better ones the more south you go, especially around southern part of the Kii Peninsula.

The city itself isn't much to look at and I'm sorry I can't tell you much about the nightlife. There's a big river that cuts through the city and the people are pretty laidback.

Wakayama city is sandwiched between the ocean and Mt. Koya, which is a world heritage site. The natural areas outside of Wakayama city are plentiful and awesome, especially up in the mountains and the beautiful coastline to the south.

Get outside, get 'natural'. Good luck.

I've only passed through the city, but I've been to Mt. Koya 3 or 4 times and having that nearby is a pretty good asset. Lovely place, neslted in the attractive mountainside, nice temples...great place to get away from it all.
