Hi there,
I'm leaving for Uruguay soon. Adios to freezing winters in Canada. I've heard there is work in Montevideo for native English speakers. Does anyone know or have an idea what English teachers earn per hour?. I realize the hourly rate won't be much but hopefully enough to get by.
A post-secondary business admin. diploma and a CELTA is all I have for education. (Not much I know). However, I am fluent in Spanish.
Any info and/or advice is greatly apprieciated.
Gracias

From what i've heard (and i've been in buenos aires for well over a year), there's absolutely no work in Montevideo or anywhere in Uruguay. That's a shame as it's one of the coolest cities i've been to, like BA on weed...very chilled...and it also has, every Sunday, one of the very, very best open air markets in the world; truly awesome.
Montevideo has the opportunity to either ambush market or piggyback itself off BA but whether the ridiculously chilled Uruguayans will be bothered is another matter.
BTW, if you want to make friends in Montevideo, all it takes is a "Ya fui a Buenos Aires pero no me gustO tanto, son todos ladrones por alla..prefiero Uruguay", and you're properly set for the whole weekend...trust me... |

Man, is that the truth...
I remember in Colonia, Uruguay I accidentally tried to pay with Argentine money....they were understandably NOT AMUSED....

There was a time not so long ago when they wouldn't even take it in Argentina.

Yes -- in fact in Puerto Iguazu, they tried to pawn off one of those older "provincial" bills on me -- one that technically is still legal, but only in its designated province, and not acceptable in the rest of Argentina. I wonder how often that works on unsuspecting Iguazu Falls tourists?

Often enough for them to keep trying it, I guess. But it doesn't cost them anything to try... |
