Hi all,
I've just got my passport back from the TECO in London. I've been given a 60 day visitor visa (which, from what I have read, seems to be the best when going to Taiwan looking for work). My visa says on it that "No extension will be granted". Does that mean I'd have to leave the country to get my resident visa (once I find a job)?
Thanks,

No. Yes. Maybe.
Welcome to Taiwan.
Just get your Health Certificate right away. Keep on top of your employer to get the right paperwork together. Have lots of passport size pics of yourself and make sure you bring the original of your University degree.
Even after all is said and done, the person you deal with at any level of government may be on the rag that day and you get sent to HK for your resident visa.
With that in mind, I've assisted plenty of teachers get extensions on their VVs when they thought they had to do a run. It's taiwan. You just can't tell what is going to happen in any given situation. you can do everything right, in an orderly fashion and still get sent packing, or you can screw up everything and be shown leniency.
I love it. |

I just got here about 1 month ago. As long as you find a job within that 60 days you should not have to leave the country. You do have to leave if you get a landing visa though. |

Not to rain on your parade there Argon, but it's not that cut and dried. Anything can and does happen. As you will see.
When you can snatch the pebble from my hand, young Grasshopper....it will be time for you to stop asking questions and start answering them. |

In my particular case, I have never had to leave the country on visa runs. If you have a 60 day visa, and you and your employer are even half-way on the ball, you should have plenty of time in which to have everything done in time.
That said, it's wise to plan for the possibility that you may need to leave the country. Your best defense against a trip out is to hit the ground running and get your health check done soon after getting here, get a job within the first few weeks, have all required documents including your actual degree and get your employer submit them right away. |
