I have a question for the forumites. I have been asked to write some English dialogue for what I assume is going to be a text book. I don't really know the details yet. What do you think is reasonable fee to charge for my services? I am in Beijing. |

How long is a piece of string?
How much writing do you have to do?
How long is it going to take you? |

Like I said, I don't know the details yet. My question is mainly for those of you who have experience. How much did you charge per hour? Or did you charge per five hundred or thousand words? |

Hmmm... Are they in a legal situation to publish books and market them?
That would be a key question: if they want to hit the market with their textbooks, they will need an ISBN.
That means the censor gets involved, but that's not your concern.
In any event, you should go for a high enough settlement because you can wager they are going to squeeze the most money out of their sales for themselves!
A book will be printed and reprinted more times than they will let you know. And they may choose to resell their "copyrights" to another publisher.
I would ask them for a flat rate irrespective of their printrun - they cannot anticipate the latter.
And I would stipulate that they use me for PROOFREADING of the galleys!
You can slip in a harmless mistake to ensure they comply; if they fail they are going to produce a sloppy product! That's your sweet revenge of sorts! |

Roger dodger, you don't mean you personally, I hope! This forum may be a casual environment but nonetheless some proofreading of your own posts would be helpful.
As for the OP's question, the issue was recently discussed on a Yahoo Group forum (Guangzhou Native English Teachers Organisation) and the general consensus was that such work shouldn't be done for less than 200 RMB / hour. |
