Hi,

I've been here nearly four weeks now and have got myself a place, settled into teaching and have set up enough of a life to feel comfortable. And now I'd like to start to start supplementing my income with a couple of private students like I had in Germany (where I lived for 2 years). What would people think is the best place to find them? I've tried looking on Tealit.com but have only found students who don't pay enough to make it worthwhile. Any ideas / suggestions?

Cheers,

Nathan

In my experience, a lot of privates come about from word of mouth, so you may have to be a bit more patient! I tried Tealit also when I first got here but I didn't get my first private until I'd been here for five months! Also, being in the right place at the right time can be the best way to get privates. Both my girlfriend and I have been approached in coffee shops and in the street by people wanting private lessons. You could also try putting an ad up in somewhere like Subway, Bar 45, JR Cafe or Grandma Nitty's, if you reside in Taipei, that is. Good luck!!

print up ads with your name and ph. no to put up in coffee shops, schools (Uni), etc where there are bulletin boards.

carry business cards that say ENGLISH TEACHER (even nice hand made ones) and give them to everybody you communicate with.

depending where you are, it does take a lot of time to get privates. and as somebody mentioned, you'll get a lot of them just walking down the street or sitting in a restaurant.
