| Anyone ever been to Cappadocia in the winter (or any time, for that matter)? I am heading over there for 3 days during the bayram in January to stay in Goreme and quite excited about staying in a cave hotel. Let's hope this is not a bad idea. Anyone have any recommendations of places I simply MUST see? I've read about the Goreme Open Air Museum, the old frescoes, and of course, those beautifully phallic fairy chimneys. Any recommendations? |

I went there several years ago, when the Ramazan bayram was at the end of january. Freezing bloody cold, ice in the bathroom, all but a couple of the restaurants and the Hard Duck Cafe closed: It was bloody brilliant!
I would post an excerpt from a book I based on my Turkish experiences but it would be too long for here. |

If you like being outdoors, there are plenty of 3 day walking tours advertised in the papers ... not sure if you can organise a one-dayer while there though, so you might be forced to join a tour group setting off together from Istanbul (or wherever) ... the trips usually combine walks with visits to the underground cities ... etc... trips to the wine makers of the region ... etc ...
As abhorrent as a tour group may seem, at least those on the group are not from one's homeland ... and if you're only a short-term stayer in Turkey, you probably wouldn't have a better chance of meeting so many Turks outside a work or business environment ... |

| I went there about 2 years ago after a long absence, totally brillant!! The cave dwellings are something else and the scenery is just out of this world . Go to Urgup a good place to buy carpets and the Tursan wine cellar has some of the best wine available in this country .If you go by coach bear in mind you will travel overnight and arrive early the next day not feeling your best its usually at that time a tour starts around the local area all you will want is a bed . Insist on that if you can or you will be knackered when you go back . |

| I lived in the area for two years and found that Cappadocia in winter was my favourite time to be there-- no hordes of backpackers, no carpet salesmen trying to entice you to buy. If fact, in a great way, it felt like the whole region had returned to normal and resumed daily activities not aimed at tourism. The snow on the fairy chimneys is gorgeous, the skies are generally bright and sunny and the air is crisp and not intolerably cold. There are enough restaurants and pansyons open to keep you cosy and well fed. |
