|

Hello all! I am heading to Spain in June 2006. I am currently finishing my teaching contract in Japan where I have been instructing children. From everything I have read, teaching positions in Spain for June to September are slim to none! Therefore, I thought it wouldn't hurt to look into a non-teaching job for the summer months while studying spainish. My question is: should I just wait until I get to Barcelona to look for a job or get one before I leave? Since I am probably going to have to accept a non-teaching position, it seems easier for me to just go on foot and look for a job. Probably as a waitress or somesort. Unfortunatly my Spainish is very poor, given that I have been teaching English and speaking Japanese for over a year now. I would think that may be a problem for working with the public. Are there any other options for work in Spain? At least for the summer months. I am not too concerned about the pay for now, as I have some squirrled away and am going with my husband who already has a job in Barcelona. Any advise is very much appreciated. Cheers.

I don't know about Barcelona, but here in Madrid all the bar jobs are snapped up by May when the terraces appear, the same on the Costas too, so if you're going to do the bar thing, then perhaps think about coming early. |

Hey, thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly, I cannot come to Spain any sooner as I am getting married in May. Is there a possibility of finding my own students on a tutorial basis? That may be the best way to go about it. Thankfully, my soon to be husband, already has a job so money will not be too much of a problem. Any other suggestions would be most welcome. Cheers again. |

If you don't mind teaching kids then I'm sure you'll be able to pick up the odd private lesson over summer for children who did badly in their summer exams and need to catch up. |

One possibility re: non-teaching work in Barcelona could be working for a Call Center. These businesses always seem to be looking for English speakers due to a pretty high turn over.
Buena suerte,
