Before I start, thanks to anyone that responds.
I am curious about what the average benefits are for an average teaching position in Hong Kong. Be it NET or just a private academy/school. What is the average pay equal to, for a first-timer in Hong Kong? On average, how long does it take to find employment? Can someone on average work in the NET scheme without a b.Ed, but with a BA and TESOL certificate?
I don't have my B.Ed or an MA, but I do have a BA and TESOL certificate. I have 2 years of experience in Korea, at an elementary school, not academies. I'm 25, and I am from Canada. So, for someone like me, what are the chances like in Hong Kong and the average situation like? I am really looking to settle and am looking long-term, so I am not just someone that is doing something for a year, so maybe that could also work for me.
Once again, thank you to anyone that helps me, and sorry for the overuse of average, but I am used to the Korea forum where everybody gets angry about everything.

Also, I have some ability in Cantonese already, so that might count for something. Perhaps it shows that I am serious about wanting to be there. |

Hi there,
There is a world of difference between getting work as a NET and doing stuff in private language centres such as ready to learn et al. If you think you qualify for the NET scheme then go for it by all means but I would have my doubts personally on that score. Perhaps other NETS can advise you.
Going down the private academy route you can expect between 14/18000HKD and hopefully visa sponsorship which would save you hassles. Private work pays about 200 up an hour and you will find some if you look in the right places. Must dash drop me a pm if I can be of furhter assistnance.
Cheers

Because of recruitment problems for the PNET scheme you could probably get a job with your qualifications, but unlike language schools the purpose of the PNET scheme is primarily teacher education rather than just a language teacher. You are expected to know about things like teaching phonics and reading and have the ability to hold PD sessions to introduce teachers to new methods and approaches. You will also be required to co-plan and co-teach lessons.
Because you have little experience and no education qualification you would start at the bottom of the scale - about HK$17000 + 12950 housing allowance. |
