|
|
Hello,
I'm looking for a website where teachers post feedback on their experiences at a lot of different universities in China. I know there's stuff on here, but it's interspersed with all the other stuff. Also, a lot of Chinese universities I do searches on here for information about haven't been discussed on here. Does anyone know of any websites that have a forum or section specifically for foreign teacher feedback about many different Chinese universities? Thanks .... Michael |

You don't get to make any enquiries over here. You will just be slagged off.
Name the uni and you will probably get some info on it from someone other than the selfrighteous watchers of this forum- and I don't mean the moderators. Good luck! |

You are already here so I think that you are off to a pretty good start. The forum at Daves is a good source of information about schools and the good thing about here is that unfair posts about schools will generally be met with questions from some of the long term teachers here, while legitimate posts will generally be acknowledged as fair warning. Basically you get feedback on feedback here. Try the search function.
Admittedly some of the information can be hard to find here and even gets lost as it is purged from the board. As nolefan has pointed out there are other sites that may have information posted in an archive fashion.

I can't disagree that school reviews should be considered carefully. Reviews that state the good and bad points of the school and avoid emotional language and personal insults are often the most accurate and most helpful reviews. Reviews that lack an obvious bias are also valuable. Finally, reviews that blame the school for situations beyond the schools control such as air quality or blackouts are often not as valuable as ones that concentrate on the school itself.
It is from all of the above that it seems so important for teachers to review their own schools. If we all took a moment to write 100 words about the schools that we currently work at, as well as those that we have worked at in the past, then there would be quite a good database of information available. Also, assuming that you are doing this for the sake of information rather than a vendetta against a particular school or person in a school, it is likely that the information you produce may be of more value to furture teachers than the general rants by dissatisfied teachers.
As many of you know I am involved in archiving such comments and therefore I would appreciate if any of you who haven't written reviews before could take a moment to do so and send these to me. Just think of how valuable that information could have been to you when you were researching that particular school. |

As Nolefan said, www.chinaschoolreview.com is one, run by Nate, a genuine guy just interested in providing information.
Its been regularly blocked from within China, but is easily accessible from outside.
Here's some advice from another time zone that can help you get into hard to access sites:
Hey Nate, I just got your site! Sadly, it wasn't from my bookmark - that didn't work!
I went to a site called anonymouse http://anonymouse.org/anonwww.html - typed your URL, and up it came. I was able to navigate around it as normal. There is a small ad window in my browser from anonymouse but I didn't mind that.
Thought this might be of interest for Nate's as well as any other sites we have trouble getting from here. |

Another site worth checking out is - Workplace Mentor List
http://teflchina.org/jobs/mentors/index.html
The Workplace Mentor List is a list of English teaching institutions in China with the names and contact email addresses of native English teachers who've worked at them. The people listed can be contacted to ask about their listed institution(s) - ask anything you like.
The institutions featured on the list are those that have been submitted by the mentors. Some are schools, some universities, some private institutions; anywhere English is taught in China that hires native English teachers can be included on the list. The list is neither black nor white; schools featured may be good, bad or indifferent. You can use it as a starting point for researching institutions at which to work or to find out more about a place with which you've already had contact.
What can I ask a Mentor?
Anything you like! Different things are important to different people when they come to work in China. You can ask about terms and conditions; the friendliness of the staff; things to see in town. Workplace mentors are there to answer any questions you might have. They've not only experienced the institutions but also the area. There's a lot they can tell you. |

All the sites mentioned above are good resources, although I'd like to state that www.ChinaSchoolReview.com is no more. I ended up moving the site over to www.ChinaSchoolReview.net, so hopefully we can stay in business for a bit over there. |
