Er, why would you ask this in the Saudi forum? Wouldn't it be more logical in the Oman forum, or maybe General Middle East? |

I will make my usual response to wide open questions.
Have you done a search? Have you read the posts already on the board? What are your credentials? What is your experience? What are your expectations?

Veiledsentiments is being sensible when she suggests that the first step should be to read this forum and do other research. Then post some specific questions with more details of who you are, what experience you have etc. |

living here is quite interesting. The people are nice and friendly, the students are in the main great, but generally the standard is not that great - so you have to work hard to get them to a reasonable standard. You also have to remember this is a different culture, so problems arise with exams - they are usually set far too low, so most can pass - a problem with validity. However working with the Ministry of Higher Education is not problematic generally. Well there are a few problems from time to time but not unsurmountable. However, Oman is probably one of the better countries to work in in the Middle East - this is not what I can say categorically, as I have never worked in other Middle East countries prior to here. However, given that others have and they now work here and have told me of their experiences, this is a fairly good place to work. It is hot here, so remember that. Very hot, but you live in airconditioning. Housing can be a problem in some areas, but when you settle into a decent place you feel fine. It has taken me about the usual 3 - 6 months to settle in here. Because I have lived in many countries, I find, depending on how different it was from the last place, or how different it is from your own living conditions, it takes a while to settle in. Of course, if you are out of Muscat, there is not much to do. You have to make your own fun or develop some activities that interest you. This is a very conservative country and so conservatism rules. But it is nice to go to Muscat from time to time. Really this is an interesting country - it is not flat desert and it has a lot going for it, as long as you don't expect city lights. |
