Quote:
"When I see the blind and wretched state of man, when I survey the whole universe in its dumbness and man left to himself with no light, as though lost in a corner of the universe, without knowing who put him there, what will become of him when he dies, incapable of knowing anything, I am moved to terror, like a man transported in his sleep to some terrifying desert island, who wakes up quite lost with no means of escape. Then I marvel that so wretched a state does not drive people to despair."

Blaise Pascal (1623-62)

Seeing that negative posters are eventually purged from the forum ... what keeps the rest of you from despair ?

While one could argue that 'negative' is a relative term, perhaps it is more appropriate to say those posters got what they deserved. And while some might lack that essential 'verve' in their posts, I suspect 'boredom' is the correct label.

On another note, is language a part of that despair? Babel attempted to climb to God with his tower and mankind was punished with LANGUAGES. Are language teachers hands of Allah, handing out punishment like pieces of notebook paper?

It sure feels like that some days. Other days it feels like we're the ones being punished.

I'm sure many students who have not enrolled voluntarily on a course could well feel that they are being punished by someone for something ...

I'm not sure, however, that they would grant their language teacher the status of being a doer of the lord's work ...

it wasn't Babel, it was Nimrod the Hunter. Babel was the place, i.e. Babylon.
