Hi all,

Im a British national, currently traveling, but en-route to Tokyo to teach for a year or so. No teaching job lined up yet but I do have the WHV so was hoping to fall into something using that.

However, Ive now heard from a friend, a fairly reliable source in fact, that as a British national, my employer wont be able to change my visa status from WHV to permanent, even if Im offered a full-time contract. Apparently the switch is simple for Canadians and Australians on the WHV, but not allowed for Brits. Can anyone confirm this?

So am I basically left with a visa that is worse than no visa at all? I only applied for the WHV as a stepping stone into a full time contract.

Any advice and confirmation of this greatly appreciated.

Cheers

The only reliable source is the immigration office as they are the only ones who issue and change visas. Anybody else is simply hearsay. You may as well go and ask someone at the pub.

You can change the visa to a sponsored work visa by lining up a sponsor but you need to have a degree for the visa. Simply take in your paperwork and the paper known as 'change of status of period of stay. Immigration will do the rest.

An instructor visa and a permanent resident status are two different visas. By the sounds of it, you dont qualify for PR but could get an Instructors or Humanities visa from immigration.

PS your employer doesnt change your status, YOU do by filing an application at the immigration office. Your employer simply hands in the paper work for your sponsored visa.
