Received a money order in Japanese Yen from Royal Bank of Canada. It's addressed in my name but also says 'To: Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd., Tokyo, Japan". The first bank i went to said i can only cash it at my branch and that it would cost 4000 Yen. Seeing as the check is only for 10,000 i'm looking for another way to cash it. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem last year. The Cdn gov't sent me a cheque in yen and my bank in Japan said it would cost me 5,000 yen to cash it and take 2 months, which like you almost covered the amount of the cheque. I ended up sending it to my dad who deposited it in my cdn bank account.

Yes 10 years ago I received my one and only cheque from Canada from a relative and paid 3,000 yen and waited 3 weeks for it to be cashed. As it was only a $50 cheque (at the time about 4000 yen) I made sure to receive my cash in different ways after that. It's sad to hear things have not improved in all this time, but basically Japan is not a cheque country - most people have no idea what they are unless they happen to work in the foreign exchange section of a bank.

Yes it is a challenge to cash a cheque here. I received one from the car tax office in Gifu JAPAN. Yes, JAPAN. and the lady still needed help from her boss on what to do. Her boss had to walk her through the process.
