Hello. I am applying to JET and if I get the interview I want to wear the right suite. In Japan is wearing a black 3-piece suit too much. Friends say I look like I'm going to a funeral when I wear it. Should I wear the softer "power suit" colors such as navy-blue and dark gray? If I am offered an interview for JET I want to wear something that would be acceptable in Japan. I'm not in Japan right now so I'm not sure. Thank you.

People may or may not disagree with me, but here is my opinion:

A 3-piece suit is too much -- regardless of colour.

Any colour suit is O.K. but stay away from black -- that's usually for very formal occasions, such as weddings or funerals.

Having said that, any colour tie is usually O.K. but I'd lean towards something more conservative. Stay away from pure white or pure black ties at all costs, those being reserved for weddings and funerals, respectively.

If it were me, I would opt for a 2-piece (2 or 3 button) suit jacket and pants, in a neutral colour such as Steel Grey, brown or Navy, black dress shoes, white shirt, and a nice tie of a different colour. Boring but respectable.
