Incorrect. New teachers receive free dorm lodgings their first year (and longer if they want). They receive training and support. They also can work as much as they feel they can handle. Some new teachers (depending on when they arive) may temporarily have empty slots in their schedules while classes are found for them. This is offset, however, by the fact that they have virtually no living expenses.
Gloria promises in their contract that an FT will receive a minimum of 20 hours per week. I have yet to see them fail to live up to that obligation. As I said, brand new teachers may work a few weeks at under the minimum, but their schedules will fill out--especially after they get trained up-- and they will average more than the minimum over time.
I have worked at a number of places in my time here, including GES. I have first hand experience with them and can say they are a safe company to work for, as good as any other IMHO. |

Thanks for the reply.
I just have a few more questions if you dont mind:
- How is the residence? Im worried that the rooms may be so small, forcing people to move out and get their own place.
- Were you able to make good money and save good money? even though you (or some new teachers) may receive less then 20 hrs?
Thanks. |

I haven't lived in them for the simple reason that I arrived here with no commitments and had a place lined up before I had my job. I am told you have a room in an apartment that you share with other employees. That obviously has good and bad points. Good: as a new person, you will meet and form friendships with the others living in these apartments. Bad: you will have room mates to contend with.
Typically, people take advantage of the free rooms for a good part of their first year (usually not longer, though a few have). Myself, I'd look at it as a temporary arrangement (unless I only intended to stay a year, in which case I'd likely stay in the dorm the whole time and pocket the savings).

You don't receive less than 20 hours for any signifigant length of your overall stay. If you want a lot of hours, they have plenty of daytime gigs as well. I was once offered a combination of working hours that would have had me making north of 120k per month. That would have been manic and is somewhat a-typical; I wouldn't want to create the impression that these kinds of offers come along often there, but if you want to make 70-5k, it's certainly possible (and common). I never suffered at GES. |

They are "safe", no doubt. And they provide training. But, the dorm has WAY TOO MANY ROOMS for the amount of people. My good friend had a room there. The rooms are really small. The teachers (4 of them) that I've spoken to, this was around Halloween time (this was a few months after they arrived too), were 1. unhappy with the amount of hours they were getting 2. desperately wanting to get out of the dorm..That's just what they said.
Dont forget that if you work for Gloria they make you run around to all these schools in different cities!! One of my roomates actually works for Gloria (she is leaving, not comepleting even her 1 year contract) was teaching a huge class of Postal workers, I'm talking over 50 students and was getting something like 600 / an hour. What a rip!!! Oh, and don't forget the illegal deposit they take from you. Oh and dont forget that in your contract it says that you CANT work at any other schools. Oh and dont forget that the only way to make good money with Gloria is to work weekends!
If you dont have any money. Then yeah, go with Gloria, they'll put in you in a little room for free. But, if you have money, come and get a better job! |

WOW thats crazy. What school do you work for? Can you suggest any other schools that would be better?
Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

Absolutely. I've worked there. You?

Do you have any first hand information you'd like to provide (ie have you yourself worked there?)? The "I've got a friend who says such and such" is not as compelling nor as knowledgeable as a first hand account of what a company is like to work for.

Only if you want to. In three years there I worked out of two branches, both equi-distant from my house, and none others. GES is a medium-sized chain. Teachers can stipulate that they'd like to only work in certain areas. However, it is true that teachers commonly work out of different branches on different days.

These are optional hours offered outside the cram school during times cram school classes aren't available. Some assignments are better than others. GES consulting trains the stewardesses for EVA air, for example. Nice work if you can get it. Taking daytime assigments is a way to get your income up without teaching at kindergartens. You don't have to accept the work, though.

They take no deposit at all. Salary, for a new class, is delayed two weeks and then paid in cash daily (with adjustments for tax and insurance). In other words, you begin recieving pay for a class three weeks after you start it and then every day you teach it then after. So, yes, if you up and left in the middle of the night, that would likely mean you'd lose that two weeks pay. It's no different than companies that pay you on the 10th of the month for the previous month's work. If you left that company without notice, you'd lose those ten days as well. GES always returns that money when a given class closes or a teacher leaves, EVEN if they leave before their contract is up, PROVIDED they leave with notice.

Of course they say that. That's the law in Taiwan. They are the teacher's legal employer. Second jobs are ILLEGAL, except in cases where a second work permit is obtained (but most moonlighters don't do this).

Not necessarily. I took Mondays off, then loaded my Saturdays up with eight hours of classes. I still had two days off, though, and much prefered the crowd-free Mondays for outings. Many work Monday to Friday, or even Monday to Saturday. It's nice to have the choice.

If you haven't worked there yourself, you have no clue. |

"If you haven't worked there yourself, you have no clue."
Right, so the only way to know is to work there?
I think that TALKING to people is a good way to get know about the school.
TS you make is sound like its a good thing Gloria takes deposits (cause that's what they are!) Its a good thing to work on weekends, because Saturday is the big money day for Gloria teachers!! Its a good thing to run around to all the branches at low pay because if you dont, you wont be making decent cash or have enough hours!
I'm not saying the Gloria is a BAD place to work. I think its ok if you are coming and you dont have any money or anywhere to go in Taiwan.
Otherwse, find a better paying gig!
I too run around to different schools. But not for so little money! It's easy to make more money with privates or cram schools than what Gloria pays... |

I can think of a good reason why TS or any other Gloria teacher might not want to say the cons of that school....
Gloria teachers get a bonus for introducing/recruiting new teachers to the company... |
