I have been scanning this board a while and last week sent an application in for a Net Position later this year with Edstaff in Australia(I am from NZ). I got an e-mail back very quickly saying they had sent my application on to Hong Kong and that I would possibly have an interview(by video conference) in early February. It seems strange to me how quick the reply was in that I posted on Monday night and I received a reply yesterday. Especially when I read how slow the process is usually. In fact I am a little suspicious about what edstaff actually do? Are they simply opening mail and forwarding it on? So I guess my question is for Kiwis/Aussies. Did/does everyone get such a prompt reply (and I know it is only the initial stages) or is my preconception of nasty red tape false?

Initial communication is often quite prompt, but it's an illusion -- things will get bogged down as time goes by ...

I think Edstaff vet the applications and only forward some on to the EMB. After two or three years of working for the EMB, they probably know who will be considered and who won't.

In my case, I sent an application in January, was interviewed twice in February, contacted by my school in April, signed a contract in June, applied for a visa in July, received the visa in late July, and started work in August.

BTW -- Good Luck!

An online group where a lot of the members are secondary NETs is maintained by NESTA (Native English Speaking Teachers Association).

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NESTA_HongKong/

I think they allow prospective NETs to join so that they can get information.

A second group, a break-away from NESTA's group is HKNEST. You'll get lots of helpful advice there, too.

I'm assuming you're applying for SNET position (secondary NET). There are also a couple of primary groups.

Thanks for the help. I was really just surprised how quick they were when I compare it with my experience with Japan. Thanks for the links too.
