Hello to everyone,
Im currently working as an ALT in Japan on the JET programme. I have a degree in linguistics and Grad Dip in TESOL. I have lived in Chile before, the first time being an exchange student there awhile ago. Been back there 3 times since and can speak Chilean Spanish well enough. I will be here in Japan for another year and a half. I am just wondering what my chances would be like in finding a decent paying English teaching gig in Santiago or the surrounding regions. My dream is to live and work there indefinitely ....eventually after my experience in Japan is over. This is more to get my enthusiasm and hopes up as it wont be until mid next year that I consider going. How much time should i give to sellmyself to any schools?
Thanks for any comments. |

What kind of job are you hoping to get? Teaching in a language institute, or a university, or other institution? I think how you sell yourself depends on who youre selling to.
I only have experience of working for private language institutes. They normally ask you to have some sort of teaching qualification and sometimes experience. Some have asked me for a lesson plan. It depends on the person doing the hiring.
Decent paying depends on the school. And the city. In Santiago you can earn about double than in Concepcin, for example. And personally I have found that the cost of living in Santiago isnt that much more expensive than in other towns.
Will you need a visa? Some schools will offer help (varying degrees of help) with this too.
Sounds like you want to try to secure a job while in Japan. I found a position online and it took about 2 and a half months by internet and telephone to get everything sorted. (Take into account that this was over Christmas and New Year, though.)
I didnt find a lot of openings advertised on the internet when I looked for a job here in 2005. Have you seen the list on Latin American Schools on this forum. You may try checking out some of their websites.
Hope this helps. |

Hello,
I'm looking to teach English in Chile too. I want to leave by December 2006. I am sure you will have no problem getting work since you have the JET program behind you. THat is great. I'm new to TEFL. I have a bachelors and masters in writing and an elem. ed. license. I have taught in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia and can't wait to see more of S. America. I would be anxious to hear how the job search goes (when the time comes) and maybe we could help eachother out.
My email is [email protected].
Cheers,
Mary |
