Hello there,

Just wondering how people have found it in seeking work for themselves and a partner - which countries are more receptive? How often does it all go *beep* up? Those kind of things.....ta.

I've worked in both Taiwan and China. China was by far more receptive to couples. We were able to negotiate better housing by being a couple. I looked for jobs in Korea. They were very eager to hire couples. Taiwan was o.k., but my husband hated teaching little kids. By the time we left Taiwan couple positions were getting scarce.

The biggest downside we've had is that it limits our conversation.

"How was your day?"
"About the same as yours."

From some of the couples I have observed, if you're not both keen on going to that country (and I am speaking mostly os Asia) and plan on staying the same length of time (which is hard to determine sometimes), then things might get rocky between the two of you. Homesickness and general culture shock may hit you equally, as well as employability factors which are sometimes affected by the race of you and your mate.

Another factor is the strength of your relationship itself. Local women may find the male attractive for various reasons (variety, meal ticket, etc) and the male might find some attributes of the locals are ammendable when compared to his spouse/girlfriend. In Japan and Taiwan, sex is not as big a deal (especially Japan), and when a woman decides she wants to sleep with you, whether you have a wife or a girlfriend may have little weight. In a sense, there is little moral 'brainwashing' to stop young women from starting something with you, though of course their may be some anti-foreigner attitudes in place. In general women will not be in as attractive of a position, even though of course there are some local men who might find foreign women attractive, but it tends to be more Asian women、so that Western women will be generally thought of as less desirable for more serious relationships.
