Hi all,
Although I am not yet in Japan, I do hope to be fairly soon, and I was indulging in one of my favourite past times, climbing, when I had to pause and think about whether or not I could continue it in Japan.
Is there much climbing in Japan? Are there any indoor climbing walls? Much outdoor stuff to do? Do the Japanese people have heads for heights?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance. |

I dont know about wall climbing but in case you dont know 70% of the main island of Honshu is mountains.
The Japan Alps is where Japanese go hiking and climbing and people get lost up there every year (mainly older people and a few even die up in the mountains). they have lots of huts and lodges if you are into that.
You can also climb Mt Fuji but the number of people climbing up there resembles a traffic jam.
Outdoor stuff? Japanese do whatever other people do.
Ballooning, white water rafting, camping.Canoeing.

The website www.outdoorjapan.com has a lot of information about rock climbing sites in Japan. From personal experience, climbing in Japan is fantastic. If it's not too much trouble, however, you might want to bring as much of your own gear as possible (especially larger size climbing shoes). Gear can be quite expensive and somewhat hard to find. |

Is there climbing in Japan, hell yes there's climbnig here. Lots. There's a good selection of both indoor and outdoor climbing in Japan. There's also a growing sport climbing boom here.
Where will you be living? That will make a big difference concerning access.
