You can drink in public and even public drunkenness is more tolerated than in western countries. I will occasionally buy a beer and drink it on the way home from work.

Beer is also sold in the stands at baseball games. Police will usually leave you alone here unless you are creating a disturbance.

It's generally allowed, as noted before, as long as you are not making a nuisance. That being said, people lying on the street with hovering friends asking are you okay is not bothering anyone here.

Drinking in the park is sometimes prohibited, though if you hide the beer label, you usually won't be hassled. I also drink beer on the way to the station on occasion, and sometimes on the train as long as I am sitting and it's not too crowded.

It is also perfectly OK to take a leak anywhere the desire strikes you.

Yes, as long as there's no "do not leak here" signs posted nearby.

When in doubt, do what everyone else does. I commonly see salarymen drinking beers on the trains after work, for example.

I've noticed that EATING in public, however, is generally frowned upon. It's considered quite rude.

When I used to work eikaiwa, I'd start drinking on the train ride home even before coming back to the office to clock out... Smile

Once I even spilled my beer all over the train carriage! Oops! Didn't bother me none, but embarassed my co-worker who happened to be on the same train so badly I thought she'd melt into the floor. Embarassed Every time the train turned a curve, the beer puddle would change directions and I was laughing my fool head off! There were other people on the train too but I don't think anyone even looked in my general direction.

Ahh, fond memories! (Well no... Not really...)

One day my wife picked me up after I'd had a few and on the way home I got her to pull over so I could point percy. While I was letting rip I noticed I sign right next to where I was doing my business. When I got back in the car I asked the missus what that sign said. Yep, it said "do not leak here"...Whoops Embarassed
