Despite all my reading into the customs, etiquette and culture shock sides to Japan, I have to admit that my knowledge of the country in as much as its government, the names of important figures and such (e.g. the Prime Minister!!!) is pretty poor.

I've been looking into the likes of the Japan Times newspaper website to try and familiarise myself with the more political aspects but, well let's face it, no British newspaper puts something like 'Tony Blair is our Prime Minister, and Queen Elizabeth II is our Queen' in every issue purely for the uninitiated!!

Can anyone help me brush up here? Please?

Cheers,
Phil

The Japanese Prime Minister if Junichiro Koizumi and he is single. His political party is the Liberal Democratic Party which is been in power since 1955 except a brief spell in opposition in the mid 1990's. There are 4 or 5 political opposition parties in Japan.

Japan has an Emperor, and his wife's (Empress) name is Michiko. The Emperor does not use a personal name though his real name is Akihito.

The Crown Prince is married to Masako who was a former commoner.

Thanks for the facts! Don't suppose you can recommend any good websites or resources where I can continue to brush up?

Here's the main page for "Japan" on Wikipedia, where you can find links to pages about the government, about political parties, about the prime minister, and so on:

Do you know what a "world almanac" is? It will have all of your answers. There are many print versions for sale.

Online, one of the most useful almanacs (in addition to the encyclopedic Wikipedia) is Infoplease. Here's the intro page on Japan:
