Hello! Just wanted to know what are the chances for EU citizens getting full-time 12 month contracts in Spain!! Is it possible or not? If not, what are the most common contracts? If it's contracts of 8-9 months as in Italy, what do you do in the summer for money?
Cheers |

Quote: "If it's contracts of 8-9 months as in Italy, what do you do in the summer for money?".... a very good question which a good many of us are asking ourselves right now as summer hurtles towards us. 12 month contracts are incredibly rare, usually reserved for DOSs. One or two long-term employeee of companies get them, but in return they get rubbish wages over a twelve month period and get all the classes the part-timers don't want.
Basically the schools know that therell always be someone who'll come along in September (legal or not) who wants to live in Spain and will accept such a contract and so the schools don't have to worry about keeping their staff on a retainer. Schools here work in a cut-throat environment and have very very few scruples.
Most people either save up (tricky as there's virtually no work in August, and you don't get paid until the end of September, so that's two months living on savings, that's if you can save much out of the wages over here). Basically a lot of people go to the UK to work in summer camps, go home to their parents/home countries, or just move on somewhere where you do get a decent contract.
There is a high turnover of teachers here in Spain, and I think it's this yearly financial hit that a long-termer has to deal with discourages a lot of people from staying. |
