I just noticed that inflation in 2005 was a whopping 17% In fact in the previous 4 years it has run at 6 to 12% Have wages kept up?
Interestingly the Rupiah hasnt lost anything like those figures against the major currencies which must make Indonesia considerably more expensive to tourists than it once was.
Are teachers demanding significant wage increases in their new contracts?

According to the Jak Post the Rupiah is trading now at around the level it was a year ago, but inflation is definitely around the 15-17% mark.

This means that anyone renewing a contract now should be looking for at least that much of a rise just to stay even. I have certainly noticed inflationary price increases over the last year. Virtually everything I buy regularly has gone up by between 10 and 20% during that period. The only thing that has come down in price recently has been non-subsidised road fuel like Pertamax.

It will be interesting to see which schools raise salaries to account for inflation, and by how much. Keep us all posted, guys.

The EF I worked at did in early 2002. The salary's gone up again at least a couple of times since then...

As for salaries of the average Indonesian.....fat chance!

Wow what a good subject! Just yesterday fuel went up again, but wait only 10% so since October 2005 thats a 160% increase and chicken has gone from 12,000 to 19,000 since Jan 1.
Who said 17%?
BSP said Jan. inflation was 4.26% for foods
BI says they forecast monthly inflation at 3.19%
O and power will go up by 30% this month I here
Went to fill up my bike this morning and it cost an extra 6,000.

I have noted, school pay has not improved over the last year, some schools are offering the same salary they were offering 4 years ago.

On a positive note, there are lots of teaching jobs around, and many travelers to fill them.

So what would you now consider a reasonable salary for both Jakarta and outside? I just cant imagine schools upping salaries by 2 million.

Educated, qualified and experienced teacher - 10 - 12 Million

No education, qualifications, experience - 700.000rp (half the salary of a local qualified teacher).

Fair? Laughing

(above salaries for teaching ESL - more for specialist subjects)

If a family of 4 can survive on less than a mil a month why can't a FT survive on 6-12 mil a month?

It astonishes me to find single (usually male) bules, living in free housing, who moan that they can't survive here on 10 mil a month(!) Just what do these guys spend all their money on? Reality check here... where else in the world, let alone the western world, can a schoolteacher realistically expect to eat at posh restaurants every day, drink like a drain every night, and go everywhere by taxi??

Similarly, it astonishes me how little even the best local teachers can hope to make. We have one with Aussie university education - great teacher, knows exactly what she's doing, students love her, never late or absent - who gets a fifth of the salary of the lowliest bule.

yes its true local teachers are under paid. Crying or Very sad

gugelhupf you must be good at cash management i have never been able to eat at posh restaurants every day, drink like a drain every night, and go everywhere by taxi?? Shocked

well unless you call Burger king posh as it has A/C if i ate at the outback ya only 150-250,000 a meal i cant do it

Drink like a drain? At 70,000 a drink or even at home for 200,000 a bottle? Nope cant do that

really taxi to the restaurant round trip 100,000 dinner for 2, 275,000 and drinks 450,000 =825,000 for a night out and not gone to a club yet!

and thats not the high end just the mid Surprised

Sorry, I didn't make it clear that I'm not saying you CAN do those things on a teacher's salary - rather I was criticising those bules I have met who seem to think they are entitled to live that lifestyle.

Where's the money go? I don't know how these guys are always broke at the end of every month - so broke they sometimes borrow money from their maids!!!! WTF is that?

I shop at carrefour, eat out regularly, have a membership at an expensive gym, got all the gadgets at home, new motorcycle, and regulary buy new clothes, import books etc.

I just received my new MTB ordered from Taiwan at almost $US2000 and I still have money in the bank.

Money goes lining the pockets of rich Chinese/Indonesian bar owners $10 a drink - are you insane??? I still go out BUT I have cash at the end of the month...for $10 you can eat your face off at many restaurants/cafes in JKT - 'd rather do that, then hit the gym, throw some massive weights around then go home and have some jungle love with my chocolate girl Very Happy

If teachers come here to party, it certainly is a good place to be & most earn just enough to do that - but why complain about salaries? Going to clubs in Jakarta or 5 star hotel bars in any other city is the same as going to top clubs in London or New York (relatively speaking) - could you do this as a teacher at home? I doubt it - so why complain about salaries.

You can have it all here whatever lifestyle you decide to adopt, if you are dependent & debt free.

Salaries will go up when schools are forced to hire real teachers to do real jobs - most teachers are in the school that is most suitable for them at their stage of their 'holiday' or 'career' - we all start at the bottom, BUT we can all afford a damn good time here wherever are on the pay scale.

Count yourselves lucky Wink
