I've been offered a job selling English books and giving workshops about them. Anyone gotten into the world of English sales? Got anything bad or good to tell me? I'm trying to decide if I want the job or not.

Might give you a chance to expand your horizons a bit...network? I've thought about seeking such a position here in Mexico before as all the big publishers have reps here.

Go for it, it will give you experience. Someone has just opened an esl materials store in **** where I live, and apparently she started as a teacher than shifted to publishing and sales in Japan. Oddly, there was no such outlet before she opened, in a city of 3 million where half the inhabitants are not native speakers... good on her. I wish I had her commercial nous. Now excuse me, i must get back to filling out my welfare application forms... Confused

Where I work, we've been forced to sit through far more of those publisher workshops than I care to count. Most of them were pretty bad. My point here is if you become a workshop presenter for a publishing company, don't expect a warm reception and undivided attention from teachers in all schools.

Publisher's presenters usually get a warm welcome in Ecuador, because they bring presents. So far this year, I've got a nice day planner, a nice wall calendar, and a thermal insulated spillproof coffee mug. Sometimes we even buy their books, but I'm always glad to see them...

It's probably only for the size and economics of the place, but Mexico City gets glitzy affairs when the top publishers come to town. I managed to get an invite for the launch of the Skyline series a few years ago. They had about 300 people in a 5-star hotel ballroom for a slick launch.

Jack Richards was here for a similar do last year launching the update to the New Interchange series.

Japan has them all the time and I get a promo every other week in my mailbox about some book launch. I doubt few people attend, I never have. The reps come by my office once or twice a year and hand out any coursebook we want. Yippee! Rolling Eyes I would not want their job, lots of travel, sucking up and pretending to be cheery. That ain't me.
