Dear Mr/. Ms/ Mrs. Crystal,
Have you ever considered contacting the local Chinese embassy and asking THEM what to do in a case such as yours? Perhaps it is a novel idea to go to an authoritative source foir the answer to such a question, but you might want to try it.
Yours truly,
Tofuman |

Mr Tofuman's advice, while carefully couched in seemingly polite words full of sulphur, was not so terribly off target.
But I imagine Mr Crystal is afraid of the reaction he might get at the Chinese consulate or embassy; the question might be: why did Mr Crystal go home on an unexpired work visa?
The best solution is to have your visa expire...or ask for a cancellation.
And why would Mr Crystal need an 'F' visa next time? Is he now in business? |

I am not sure of the procedure for China, but in Taiwan you simply ask the office to cancel your former visa and then apply for a new one. |

MOD EDIT
To the answer the OP question, Roger is perfectly correct in all forms. Please let the visa expire -- then again, it may have already expired because it may NOT have been a multiple re-entry permit to the People's Republic, in which case the question is moot.
Should it have been a multiple re-entry permit resident permit, then indeed it is doubtful, but still possible, that the Embassy or Consulate will issue a new visa until the visa expires. HOWEVER, that being said, you MAY REQUEST the Embassy of the People's Republic to CANCEL the current visa, which at its entire discretion it may do, although by the laws and standards in application it is NOT required to do, and it may issue you a new visa.
Nonetheless, I would wager that you will be issued a new tourist visa, albeit after some questioning and trust that this situation will not repeat itself. Experience has taught me that the Chinese authorities will forgive a situation once, but not twice.
All the best,
