I'm new here so hello to everyone and sorry if I'm asking the silly questions.

But I want to know what's my chances of getting a job in China teaching English. If there's not much chance I may as well keep doing what i'm doing and that's just backpacking around the world just now.

I'm not the native speaker but my English is good. I'm French by nationality and upbringing but I used to spend a lot of time in England with relatives there and so my English is good with good grammar and spokenwise. And I have backpacked in many English-speaking countries.

I've only got a high school diploma. I was a good student but restless. My math and sciences were not good but my study of European languages and English was pretty good.

There's no degree but I read quite a bit on history and world cultures. I've done a lot of reading on teaching in which I'm very interested because I think it can be a real force for good. I did a TEFL course recently for insurance. I think that's a helpful thing if I could qualify for a job in China.

I've got quite a bit of life experience and am full of confidence.

Do you think I've got much chance of getting a job in China and where do you think I might be employed with my background? I'd like to work in a university because I think for starters I'd be better with adults but maybe I'd have to go to less desirable places. I guess I couldn't expect to talk my way into a good posting in the rich provinces.

What sort of money could I expect to be getting? Or am I aiming too high. Please be honest. I don't want to spend money coming to China only to find I'm not qualified enough. Not that I want a lot. Just some sort of job security term to term so I can do some serious backpacking in China at holiday times or even if I take a term off plus enough money to cover travel costs.

You can probably find a job but I doubt you will be working legally. Remember that this increases your chances of getting cheated about 110%. You said that you would be comfortable teaching adults, keep in mind that university students seldom act like adults (think of students about 14 or 15). You best chance would be to head into the provinces that have less FT's.

I think in the bigger cities you will struggle to get a job that brings in regular income . Teaching French will not pay that much . You may get 50 yuan an hour if you are lucky. I've been through all this with my girlfriend who has managed to get a few part time jobs teaching English that help her so if you want to PM me please do.

I think Babala is on track with that advice. Have you got an accent ? Is your English really that good ?Are you prepared to lie about your Nationality? From your post your level seems to be about as good as my girlfriend - Intermediate - Upper Intermediate. She's working really hard to keep some part time work going right now but she is getting by .

I'm serious ytange (whatever that means! Are you Chinese?). I don't know what gives in China but I wondered if I've a chance. I know I haven't got much to offer but I think it's worth a try and I'm not sure you've got to be the perfect native speaker from Manchester or Dingo Flats to teach English speaking well. I've heard the pay's not much but you can live well on it.

Are there other people who have backgrounds like mine? Maybe they could give me some advice.

It would be good to know some specific places where I could apply. If any of you have qualifications like mine and if you think there's a place coming up where you are, you could pm me, maybe.

Ytange, are you in China or are you thinking of going to China too? Forgive me, but I did think that your English was a little bit, as we say, of the Amelie style. But English is very forgiving as my old teacher used to say.

I'll do my homework and see if some of the previous postings/posters will give me the China picture.

And there are native speakers in China that do not know how to teach . I've seen some very good non native English teachers.

Ytange, I know it's your National Day and you sound as if you've had a few. I'm sure the English will come through to you tomorrow or the day after after you've sobered up.

I've got some interesting pm's. If I think you'd shape up in the way I want to shape up, I'll forward some of the info. to you. But just now, I'm not sure.

My worry about my academic background is really a moral one. You know what the French are like on these matters. Would it be moral of me to try to get a job in a country that sets certain minimal qualifications for entry to a teaching job when I know I am simply not what I would appear to claim to be to my clients. Maybe I could get a job with a bit of hankie-panquie on my employer's part but I would know that I was not quite what the clients would think they were paying for. Ah! Descartes and Pascal.

Maybe these are but scruples but they do trouble me.

But, ytange, do they worry you? What's your spoken English like? I hope it's more understandable than the English I've heard in western NSW and Victoria in recent months.

may be if you you write something in really difficult Enlish, they dont understand it anyway and think you are English

may be some dudes are like you with no English but that doesnt matter if you knock up something on the computer or you can sell used cars

May be some other dudes in China are not really the English speakers like you.

Are you completely mental?? I suppose I could take you more seriously if you actually spoke the language with some clarity, and without the mistakes (or are they errors?).
