Hello all. Is there anyone living in Fortaleza I could connect with. I'm moving there in June 2006 to teach English and hopefully I will eventually open a massage practice. I would love to talk with someone from there if you would be willing. I've got a few questions:

-If I come there and find work without a work permit, like most people on this site suggest, how do I open a bank account?

-Has anyone started a business in Fortaleza or anywhere else in Brazil?

-Do know if there are many massage therapists in Fortaleza?

-Where in the city would be a good place to live with a good balance of affordabilty, decent neighborhood, and access to beaches, if such a place exists?

-Do you know about how many expats live in Fortaleza?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

why did you choose fortaleza. just curious because I am trying to move to brazil in a month or so and am having trouble deciding which city to move to. Have you lived in any other cities?

I chose Fortaleza because of the size, the ocean. It's supposed to be a very popular tourist city in Brazil because of the beautiful beaches.

it`s full of whores. the best place to move would be near the beach if you like it. everything near the beach is expensive, the city look ok. people aren`t that great.

Opening a bank account.. just go to any bank.. its not like Shanghai I guess (based on your ID name).. I don't know China.. but I know in Brazil that bank accounts aren't connected to work permits.

Massage therapists.. hmm.. I'm not entirely sure.. but like the above poster mentioned.. Fortaleza has tons of freelance prostitutes prowling around absolutely everywhere.. and it would probably be cheaper for someone to buy a hooker for the night then whatever it is you might want to charge as a masseuse for an hour or two.. just guessing on that, as I'm not sure how low you'd charge for a massage.

Hi. First of all, Fortaleza is a lovely city. There are some prostitutes here, as in all big cities, but they mostly serve the tourists, so if you don't go looking for them, you will not see them. Finding a job without a permit may be a little difficult. It pays to have connections. Opening a bank account may be difficult. I believe you have to have a national identification card. But cash is used much more frequently here than in the U.S. to pay for bills. I have not started a business, but I believe it can be difficult. It might be easier to start with an unofficial business in your home. You'd just have to advertise well. Remember, if you need to take out a loan, the interest rates here are extremely high. I think the best neighborhood for you would be Joaoquim Tavora. It's about a 30 minute walk from the beach and not the most expensive in town.

I would be glad to tell you more and talk to you once you get here.

I tried to live in Forteleza for a time. I found it to be a nice city, but to teach English. Forget it. I tried for 2 months to get something. I finally went to Sao Paulo.

Good luck and watch your money. The ladies witll try and drain you for everything you have.
