I'm looking to teach next year in Guadalajara. My wife will be attending ITESM - Guadalajara and I would like to teach near there. Does anyone know of schools in that part of town that may hire me with these qualifications:

Currently I am a senior at a public university and will graduate with a BS in Anthropology, Spanish minor in May. I have worked as a Chemistry teaching assistant for two years, and currently work for a test preparation company as an MCAT tutor. I have plenty of experience tutoring non-English speaking children in reading and spelling, but no formal ESL teaching experience or teaching certificate.

You would actually make more money if you taught Spanish to retirees. There is a large gringo retirement community in Guadalajara and just to the south of Guad. at Lake Chapala. You can charge approx. $20 an hour which is far more than any school would pay you.

A few years back a friend of mine was a Professor at the University of Guadalajara, teaching Spanish and making about $4 an hour.

Something to consider

Is there language schools I could work for teaching Spanish or would I need to be a private tutor?

I would like to set up some of this before I arrive in July if possible

You would make far more money as a private tutor. A friend taught Spanish at the University Of Guadalajara, full professor, and was paid approximately $4 an hour.

have you contacted the prepatoria (high school) for ITESM? Sometimes they will hire without a TEFL.

are you a mexican teacher...what is your nationality. Tec pays a different scale for foreign teachers versus mexican. ( it is much higher for foreign)

saludos@!

just curious, but how much is the difference in pay for what is essentially the same job by two different people? what's the justification for this sort of discriminatory policy? that foreigners are better teachers because they are "native speakers"?

I'm wondering because I was thinking of applying for a job there. I am a Mexican citizen by birth, but I have lived most of my life in the U.S., and have two degrees from there (BS and MA), and teaching experience both in the U.S. and Mexico, mostly in the U.S. I am more native speaker English than Spanish (although I speak both). I'm not a U.S. citizen. If I applied for a job there, would they pay me less just because I am a Mexican citizen, rather than a "foreigner"?

While it sounds like discrimination, and it probably is, I'm sure they could justify the difference by factoring in relocation costs, education costs from other countries, incentives, etc, etc.

FreddyM, Mexico doesnt know about political correctness. How is it discrimination to select one race over another when we are speaking of tacit knowledge? Would you learn to snow ski from a Cuban? Would you learn to speak Russian from a Brazilian? The standard ad usually asks for female, good looking, single, 18-30. I think it is refreshing to live in a country that doesnt pretend that we are all the same. We have been brainwashed to think that an old person can do what a young person can. Ask an old person, they will tell you it isnt true. The politically correct people tell us that a man and a woman have the same abilities. Bullsh-t!! No two humans have the same abilities. We are all more alike than we are different, but we are different. My school has soccer for boys and dance for girls. The sex roles are well defined. There are a lot fewer people confused with whether they should be on top or bottom. All of us married to Mexican women can tell you that well defined sex roles are better. The people here cant fathom a man washing dishes or doing laundry. However, a man must give his wife money every Saturday or go to jail. I am certain some stupid Caucasian will try to change all that in a few years. cwc

Actually, I think Mexicans themselves, and not 'Caucasians', have already written the laws to try to change things.

So, without ever seeing a woman, without ever reading her resume, without ever arm-wrestling her, without ever talking to her, I should discount her for certain jobs, based only on her name? What was that about bullsh*t?

The politically correct people don't say that a man and a woman have the same abilities. What they do say is that everyone should have a chance to try, and that gender should not be a barrier to the attempt. Of course there are differences...women don't play pro football. They are not barred from trying though.

The examples of success in every single field of employment, yes, every single one, are too numerous to list here. Maybe it would be quicker if you could name one job that woman cannot do and has never done.
