forgive my ignorance, but when a school says only short listed candidates have a shot at a job, what does that mean? how do you obtain that status?

If they reply, you've been short-listed, meaning 3,4,5 candidates are being considered.
Shortlisting normally then goes to an interview; unlikely if you're in the US and the job's in China. |

What it means is, your application arrived before other applications and they think they have enough to meet requirements. "Interview" from a chinese institution?! That would be something worth taping for sure! Don't know that it actually happens. |
