Just curious everybody, Wink

What do you all do for a career when you return to you to the states or canada, australia,wales....whatever?

I say this because esl is a one way ticket to the welfare line here in the usa(texas). They pay $8 per hour, and you work 20 hrs a week!
$160 bucks a week!

So, for the last 3 years I've been managing a valet-limousine company and making it alright. I'm currently in the process of trying to return to ol Mexico.

How do y'all get along Question

your job doesn't sound so bad...i'd love to have my own fleet of limos on hand, waiting for my command, eager to do my bidding. bwaaahahahahaha!!!!!

when I got laid off from teaching ESL in the US, at a place that actually paid well, I ended up doing online teaching. it's really different from a proper job, and of course there are no benefits, but I'm now living in Mexico again, earning a decent salary (in US$), and working from my bedroom. I'm free to live wherever I want, provided it has the internet. don't ask me why I chose DF of all the places on God's green earth because I'm really not sure. (By the way, anyone who wants to recommend places they think would be better on a budget, I'm all ears).

this kind of job doesn't really pay enough or provide enough hours to live well in the US, but if you're in a poorer country it's a decent set-up. some of my co-workers live in Brazil, Costa Rica, Morocco, and Oman. the rest live in developed countries and have a spouse or other job to get by.
go online and start looking, there are plenty of different things you can do if you have experience/a degree.
good luck

p.s. There are also a few jobs in the US that pay decently, including one in Texas, but I'm afraid to post about them because I might want them some day.

as long as you're in the US, you need to live near a university and tutor. seriously, anywhere with a large Korean population will do. charge $20/hour if you have credentials. learn to teach the TOEFL and charge $25-30, or put together some mini-classes and charge $5-10/student/hour. with 4-6 students you could be making $20-50/hour. it's not impossible. i lived on pure tutoring money for 6 months. again, no benefits and it's a little scary, but it's a decent racket until you find something better. it takes a while to get a name, but if you are willing to tutor children, you can usually network your way into a community of Koreans. i say Koreans because they come to the US already used to the idea of spending 50% of their income on private classes.

So does that mean you're handily getting around visa requirements and technically a retiree living in Mexico???

I make about $1300 US (including my bonuses) per month. That's peanuts up north, but where I live you can get by pretty decently on that wage.
I'm not interested in ever working up north ever again, so that suits me just fine.

There a lots of places in the state of Oaxaca where you could live really cheaply, but you compromise and lose a lot of the things that are available to you in the bigger cities. I'd rent you my furnished two bedroom house for $1000 a month! (we were supposed to have phone service by the end of the year, so it should be any day now Rolling Eyes )

If you need to be near the big city... you might consider Toluca. Yeah, the town in general is ugly as sin but if you live near the the schools (Tec or UAEM), rents are quite reasonable. Im living in a 2 bedroom house for only $1800 pesos/month (I got really lucky although the house is a bit cold).

You can get a decent to good apt for about $1500/month. You have to look but it usually worth it. You can spend a lot more too, of course.

The reason I never put up a Christmas Avatar was that I haven't been able to get our scanner to work. I have a photo of my dog wearing a Santa suit for the university Posada two years ago. The photo was taken by the one and only Lozwich, but alsa, its in print, not digital.

This is not one of my dogs, but a picture I uh "borrowed" from a site dedicated entirely to photos of dogs dressed as bees!!!!! Razz

I don't know who's crazier, the person who made such a site, or the person who found such a site!

I have seen those, as well. It would be funny, if it weren't so sad. Every profession has its nut cases, and I guess we have now found our poster boy.
