hi
I've been offered a teaching position in the UK in a private college. The net pay (after tax etc) I've worked out to be around 14.5K a year. They also bear accommodation costs. Contact hours are approx 26 p/w. Is this a reasonable/average income for tefl/tesl teacher in a private college ?
Doesnt sound like much to me but .....
thnx for advice n views.

If Net pay is 14.5K then that makes Gross pay circa 22k, right? If the college are picking up the tab for accomodation then it's worth more (depends on type of accomodation and location, say 500 per month for a small flat?). That would put you towards the upper end of the basic pay scale for school teachers (which tops out at just over 30k at the moment).
I have heard that teachers in the private sector can negotiate better deals, but efl in the UK in the private sector often pays less than mainstream teaching. There is an enhanced pay scale for experienced teachers and/ or extra money for management responsibilities (at least in the public sector), but qualification rules vary in different parts of the UK. In Scotland you have do an M. Ed. or equivalent and show relevance to your classroom practice to get the extra money. |

personal allowance tax free 4750 odd
add to this another 12,200 taxed at 22%
and you have 14.5k
so in fact it is
17k a year not an especially interesting position in school accommodation unless all you do is teach and leave no extra "responsibilitires" |

It's a con - they always are, these residential posts, especially in EFL. They'll have you working 85 hours a week. They'll expect blood, sweat and tears for their crap accommodation and awful grub, and you'll start falling ill throught malnutrition after a few months.
Give it a wide berth. In fact, just give EFL in the UK a very wide berth - it's strictly for suckers and the otherwise unemployable. |
