If anyone is in Bolivia, I'd love to hear your impressions of Evo Morales' rise to power and what the word on the street is. I missed him by a few days in Cuba, though endless repeats of his visit were broadcast on Cuban TV.

I've read a few articles recently that recounted tales of gringo travellers being attacked by hordes of angry villagers - of cars being overturned and set on fire with the occupants trapped inside. However, that was from some time ago when villagers were setting up roadblocks. Nevertheless, I'm not sure I'd like to be a gringo in Bolivia in the near future.

Still, if Evo delivers, it may have a settling effect - on the locals, at least. Let's hope the US troops based in the Chaco don't start border incursions - that could get really nasty. If Evo legalises coca growing and nationalises gas reserves as he has said he will, then I can't see Washington standing by and doing nothing. If they resort to their usual antics then wild llamas couldn't drag me to Bolivia.

I'll bet that there are a number of 'Southern Canadians' in Bolivia at present Smile

Has anyone come across any references to Bolivia joining Mercasur?

With Chavez now funding it, no doubt Bolivia will be in soon. Mercosur could have been a good regional trading power, but it's only going to drag Brazil and Argentina down now.
