I've never seen an ESL job in Bangladesh advertised on any websites, nor have I seen any discussion about it.
Has anyone ever taught there?
Is there any demand for English speakers?
What's the deal? |

No offense, but why on EARTH would you want to go, much less work and live there? My friend who did one year of Peace Corps there described it as about the worst place I can possibly imagine.
You know how the Lonely planet puts the best of each country on the cover? Taj Mahal for india, Mt Everest for Nepal, etc. Bangladesh's cover is a bicycle seat. And it's the thinnest little book I've ever seen from LP. That should tell us all something! |

I suspect it's for the same reasons you don't see many jobs in India and Pakistan. We made the mistake of teaching them English when we colonised them, so they don't need us to do it anymore (of course the vast majority don't speak it, but enough do that they can use cheaper Bangladeshi teachers). Plus Bangladesh is NGO central, so if anyone is flying in to teach English it'll be them. Plus the economy is... not robust, so the need is that much less. |

Memorabilis: More power to the lad for having the guts to go there. If everyone was like you we'd all be still small town freaks that had never scene any of the world. I've wanted to go there myself and almost made it last year but stayed in India- frankly what's the difference. I meet very few people that heve been there and it remain a curiousity. |
